Chatty as a Librarian

So I’m working out of a small Texas town’s library today because WiFi/ cell signal is poor at my campsite. Apparently nobody’s ever told this particular location that libraries are supposed to be quiet. Earlier, half a dozen teens invaded my corner munching Funions and watching videos on their phones at full volume, without being reprimanded.

Even the librarians aren’t particularly concerned with keeping their voices down, which is why I couldn’t help overhearing the little drama that just happened at the front desk. A regular patron came in, and they asked if she was ok since she seemed a little down. It seems her family just lost its housing and can’t find anywhere affordable to move in, so they’re living out of their van for now. After she left, the librarians were all worried about her since the weather’s turned cold here. Then one of them remembered that they had access to a guest house where they could let her stay for free for at least a little while, so she called to offer it to her. It sounded like she was pretty happy to have somewhere to go out of the cold, and the librarians were so relieved to have been able to help her.Sometimes people suck, and then sometimes they restore your faith in humanity. And libraries aren’t just places to read.
