It was a gorgeous day for a hike in Guadalupe Mountains National Park! I hiked McKittrick Canyon to Pratt Cabin, and got to enjoy the beginnings of fall foliage (which won’t peak for a couple of weeks yet probably). The Guadalupe Mountains are a desert environment, but the canyon shelters a whole different ecosystem with maples and madrone trees (which I didn’t even know about, but they are very cool!). I also got to see my first tarantula in the wild.
Pratt Cabin was built by Wallace Pratt, an early 20th century geologist who came to West Texas for the oil, fell in love with the canyon, and bought it. He and his family built a lovely little cabin there. Eventually they generously donated the land to the National Park Service to be part of Guadalupe Mountains National Park so that everyone could enjoy it. The cabin still has rocking chairs on the front porch, so I took a rest there and soaked in the view!
