In Big Bend, I had the opportunity to visit the Chisos Basin (an amazing high-altitude oasis in the middle of the desert), Santa Elena Canyon (though I couldn’t hike into it because the creek was too high), and a slot canyon (where I could hike down to the bottom and look up at the steep walls). All beautiful in their austere desert way.
Looking at the Rio Grande was kind of surreal. Despite the name, it’s just a small river, really. But so much human significance. Which side of that river you’re born on determines so much of your fate in life.

The Rio Grande. Grande in significance, Pequeño in size.
